No free lunch

Last year, I ordered a Bible from the Mormon Church. I’ve always wanted to read the Bible – I accept the fact that the vast majority of our culture is religious and that the Bible influences many things in our lives, from public policy to literature. It was free. I should have known better.

Now, every six months or so, some poor guy from the Church of Mormon calls me up and tells me about how there are some Mormons in my area who want to talk to me about the Bible and the Book of Mormon. Now, I have to say, I haven’t even read the Bible yet. I’ve read half of the first page before it got boring. And I don’t really want to talk to some Mormons about religion. That isn’t my idea of a fun time. If I want to debate theology, I can do it at my school. However, I still feel kind of bad turning him down because he’s so well meaning. Maybe there’s something good in me after all. Or maybe I’m just poor.

Did you read the part about the homosexuals in sodom who wanted to do it to the angels? Boring? And you are a writer?

I did, in fact, read Genesis 19. I'm not sure what lesson I should take from this story. Perhaps it's that gay sex is evil but incest forms great nations.

The King James version of the Bible is incredibly dry and makes for difficult reading. I'll probably get a copy of the New American version; I've heard better things about it.

I'm not sure if I'm a writer. I do enjoy writing - I publish my blog on a daily basis and I enjoy writing papers and (occasionally) poetry. If that makes me a writer, I guess I am one.

New Revised Standard Version. Or the New International Version. The former is more academic, and the latter is just easier to read. Both translations are more accurate than the King James Version too, and can be gotten for about $10 or less. I'd consider getting a study bible too, because they have notes about the verses, background, and context that is very helpful. I learn a lot from it anyway.

P.S. Rule #1, don't ask Mormons for bibles. Didn't you get the memo? :P

I did miss that memo. My bad.

What sort of context could the Bible possibly have, Sean?
